The Buzz Bin’s “On Deadline” series introduces you to members of this team with a short Q&A. Meet Marissa Groechel, currently working on communication strategy and media relations for global medical device and health care companies.

Q: How did you become interested in media relations?

A: My journalism background sparked my interest in media relations. Throughout college I worked for the university news and several local publications. As a journalist, having connections across industries was crucial for getting timely stories. Now, as a public relations professional, I still get to create these connections, but the roles are reversed. It’s a unique switch.

Q: What are the top three things you need in a successful pitch?

A: First and foremost you need a story that is newsworthy, so find an interesting hook to every story. Second, you need to do your research on which journalists would be the best fit to write your story. And finally, you need the pitch to be clear and concise – journalists are getting many pitches a day and don’t have the time to read novels.

Q: What are three things on your work bucket list?

A: Three things on my work bucket list are:
• Be on set with a client placement I organized
• Have my ‘go-to’ reporters who I have created a relationship with
• Media train clients

Q: Who is your favorite media personality and why?

A: My favorite media personality is Hoda Kotb. I loved watching Today with Kathie Lee and Hoda Kotb because it started off my morning in a lighthearted way. However, I loved Hoda even more as I watched her transition from a “friend” role on TV, to a more serious role as the co-anchor of Today. I admire her transparency and ability to connect with her audience.

Q: What is the best career advice you’ve received? Who gave you that advice?

A: The best piece of career advice came from my dad who knew I was destined for a creative career. He always told me to choose a career where my life passions can flow. This led me to a career that encourages creativity and growth, and an industry that does meaningful work.
